Questions Answered and More Reading

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Legal Analysis book that was sent by my law school. I obviously knew that it was going to be an attempt to jump start the learning train for 1Ls, but I didn't think that it would be as informative as it is. I'm only a few chapters in and so far I've taken a lot from this book. It's provided a few clues on how to properly brief a case, which is something you spend your entire law school career doing. It also goes into detail to explain the importance of your first semester of law school and how it can affect your overall job prospects in the future. I'm really glad I'm reading this and apart from an actual case that was included in the second chapter, it's been a fairly easy read. It's interesting and I'm feeling a little bit more at ease.

Also, I had a blog on Tumblr before I joined Blogger. I really only use it to link back to this blog now, so I hadn't really gotten around to many of the questions in my ask box there. A lot of them were law school related, so I thought I would answer them here. So keep reading ...

Office Inspiration

I can't speak for all women, but I think eventually most of us reach the point when we're just ready to claim our independence. This can mean a lot of things, but for me it's having my own space. I am nowhere near the idea of having my dream home at age 23 ... but I am getting excited to turn the little space that I do have to myself, into a home. My sister and I have been playing around with some ideas on how to decorate my studio apartment in Cali. While going through all of these decor ideas, I stumbled across some office ones that I loved. Somehow, I always end up looking up dream offices and desk spaces etc. I think it's important for everyone to have that space at home, whether they usually work from home or not. My favorite site for office ideas is See Jane Work. She just has a way of keeping a feminine sophistication in the work area that I really really love!

I would like to get a nice desk area going in my apartment before law school. Believe it or not, I've actually never been the most organized person when it comes to academics and just work in general. I'm a hard worker, but I also have a bad habit of cramming and I forget things- important things. To be honest, the desk in my old house in Louisiana was actually used as my TV stand during undergrad. No work was ever done there. These are some habits that I'm really trying to shake and I'm hoping that organizing my life from the outside, will help organize my mind a little bit. I've always been one of those people that kind of floated through school and did well .. but I realize that it may not work for me in law school. I really need to get focused.

Mazel Tov! Sunday Weddings

Who doesn't love weddings? This weekend, I attended my first wedding in years as an actual guest and not a member of the wedding party. As much as I love being a bridesmaid and playing such a special part on such a great occasion, it's also nice to just be able to show up and enjoy the celebration from the other side. My boss' daughter was getting married and it was the absolute most beautiful day. It was an outdoor wedding and the weather was perfect, despite the fact that we literally had thunderstorms the entire day before. I've been working at the nursing home for years along with other members of my family, so overtime we've grown close with the boss' family as well. It was great that we could all celebrate this milestone together. The day was also filled with all sorts of Jewish traditions and culture, which it made it that much more memorable and exciting for me. I love experiencing other cultures and learning a little bit more about them, so to be somewhat immersed in it for a day was incredible. To be honest, if I could go to a wedding every weekend of my life, I probably would. There's nothing like being surrounded with all of that great energy. I might reconsider my life plans and just become a wedding crasher instead. That sounds like an equally great idea.

Quickly Approaching

This past week has been a not-so subtle reminder that law school is quickly approaching. My school sent this book in the mail. It is our summer reading assignment that is supposed to prepare us to "start thinking like a lawyer". A couple of days later, I also received my class schedule and section assignment. If you're unfamiliar with section assignments, they are basically just a way of breaking up the incoming class. Each section has a certain set of professors and all students in that section have all their classes together. Finding out our sections was pretty exciting and we all took the time out to introduce ourselves to our 'section mates' in my law school's Facebook group. I've also started reading the book they sent and it is sort of getting me pumped to start school. I'm sure I'll regret saying this later, but oh well ... It has to get done, so might as well start. This will be the first of many law school reading assignments, so I better get used to it!

Spoof: Queen West

While roaming downtown yesterday, I stumbled across this little store with my sister and cousin. My sister mentioned that she'd heard great things about it, but neither of us had ever actually gone in. I was looking for a dress to wear to a wedding this weekend and I am so glad that we found this place. Basically, it's a boutique that stocks wholesale dresses and clothing items from Asia. Everything comes in only one size and it is extremely affordable. As soon as I went in, I saw so many pieces that I loved. I ended up purchasing this mint colored maxi dress (bottom left photo) that I thought would be perfect for an outdoor summer wedding. It also has this crochet detailing on the back that is so pretty. It looks a lot better on, than it does on the hanger, but you get the idea. Queen West has so many amazing shops, you just need to be willing to explore it.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

I went out to the Blue Jays game last night with a friend of mine and had an extremely 'chilly' but otherwise awesome night. We arrived a little bit early, so we stopped by one of the food trucks to grab some delicious poutine. If you're unfamiliar with poutine, I suggest you just Google it, but Google won't do it justice. It's heaven on earth. Anyways, afterward we headed into the stadium. The Jays were playing the Dodgers and that was really exciting for me, because it was basically my home team playing my future home for the next three years. The stadium was packed with fans and I of course was cheering for the Jays. Unfortunately, we did not win, but it was still an amazing game. So close that we had to go into an extra inning. At one point, we were actually one strike away from ending the game early and bringing home the win, so you can imagine my disappointment when the Dodgers somehow managed to score. Win or lose though, I had such a great time and everyone loves a great game. This has been my first full summer in Toronto in years and I am loving it. I'm really just trying to soak in as much Toronto culture as I can before I have to leave.

Homemade Frozen Hot Chocolate

My cousin and I decided that we wanted to try our hand at Frozen Hot Chocolate. It might sound like an oxymoron, but trust me, it's a real thing. We didn't make this up. We based our recipe on a combination of recipes found online.

Recipe makes about 2 mason jars of Frozen Hot Chocolate (15 mins)

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of chocolate chips (white or milk, depending on your preference)
1 cup of milk
1/2 packet of hot chocolate mix
1/2 cup of cream
2 tablespoons of sugar
8 ice cubes
Whipped Cream

- Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler over medium/high heat
- When smooth, add hot chocolate mix and sugar
- Stir
- Slowly add 1/2 cup of milk
- Remove from heat. Let cool to room temperature
- Add cream, milk, chocolate mixture and ice to blender
- Blend for about 10 seconds on max speed (our blender has an ice crusher setting, but you may have to use your judgement if yours does not)
- Pour into mason jar, top with whipped cream (you can also add chocolate shavings or chips for detail)
- Enjoy

IPhone Pics and Outings

Top: Aritzia Vest: Calvin Klein (altered by myself) Skirt: Forever 21 Bag: Aldo Sneakers: Topshop
*PLEASE FORGIVE THE TERRIBLE PHOTO QUALITY. IPHONE LIFE*

I went out today with my sister, cousin and a friend of ours to Shops at Don Mills. As you can probably see from my ridiculously goofy photo, it was just a nice, chill, completely casual outing. I also got to wear my favorite T Shirt right now, from Aritzia. It says "if you can't convince them, confuse them". I loved it the moment I laid eyes on it ... I also thought it was such a fitting saying for a future lawyer. I'm not sure if that's what they will be teaching in class .. but I'm sure it's useful advice. Anyways, today was such a beautiful day and definitely a nice change from the ridiculously hot weather we've been having. We were actually able to sit on the rooftop patio, without dying of heat stroke, so that's always an added bonus. We ended up eating at Joey's and the food was amazing. I ordered the Bombay Butter Chicken and loved it ... mostly because it came with a side of naan (soooooo sooooo good). Afterward, we all went to get gelato and basically just hung around and chatted all afternoon. I love days like these :)
