Barrister's Ball: Law School Prom

So this week they announced that my law school's Barrister's Ball is coming up and the theme is The Great Gatsby. If you don't know what the event is, it's basically just law school prom. It's a night out and everyone dresses up all fancy and it's just a pretty big annual affair. I'm actually not quite sure why ours is happening so soon as it's usually at the end of the academic year. In either case, I'm pretty excited about it. It's being held on a yacht on the Pacific, so what's not to love?

In regards to the theme, I put together some items I found online that I felt would comply. I actually haven't even read the book or watched the movie, but I always hear great things about it. Not to mention, the costumes are pretty spectacular. If you're not into flapper dresses and pinstripes, then it may not be for you. The dresses from The Great Gatsby are all about the embellishments and accessories pretty much just complete the look. I have a few weeks before that night so I'm hoping to be able to go out and put together an outfit like the one above. It will be a challenge, but we'll see how it goes.

Autumn Leaves

Top: Forever 21, Skirt: H&M, Bracelet: Urban Planet, Boots: Material Girl

So even though it's technically fall, Southern California hasn't really gotten the memo. It's still pretty warm out here and I imagine it will be like this for a while. I'm in no position to complain about the weather though because I hate the cold, so I really don't mind this. In either case, I can still try and incorporate a little bit of the season into my outfits. Since I started law school, I've been trying to add a little bit more sophistication to my outfits. It's not really necessary to dress well for class everyday (it's still very much like undergrad and you can come to class in sweats without being judged) but somedays I do like to dress up. Mainly, I just try to avoid clothing with a whole lot of graphics, tears and anything that seems more adolescent honestly. I already look pretty young, so there's no point in adding to that with my attire.

My favorite part of this outfit is definitely my black booties from Material Girl. They're a little bit edgy with the snakeskin exterior but the gold trim adds a bit of feminine i-can-still-wear-these-to-work touch. I really really love them. I had to get them as soon as I saw em on the shelf. I was a little nervous about how much I would get to wear them since the weather hasn't really cooled off yet, but I do like how they look with skirts. Let me know if you have any favorite fall accessories/trends.

Full Faith and Credit

So a guy in my section posted this to my class' Facebook page today and I loved it. The video was created by Columbia Law School and it's pretty awesome. It's basically a parody of the song Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden, only it's filled with law school terminology. It's pretty impressive. So for all my law school readers or just anyone who wants a good laugh .. check it out ! I've actually spent the last 30 minutes just looking up law revue music videos like this one .... so it's probably about that time for me to get back to studying :)

Monday Promotions

I have two things to share with you guys on this lovely Monday! The first is that my sister Vanessa has finally taken a plunge into the blogging world. I'm really excited for her and so if you guys are interested, you can visit her blog here. It's called Grace and Gratitude and it's a perfect reflection of her!

Also, see that cake on the right? Well, if you live in the Toronto area and you're ever looking for a cake (or cupcakes or cake pops) for an event, then you should definitely check out Rosalina's Cakes. Seriously, it's amazing. The owner Ahlem is so talented and she has baked so many cakes for our family. We've ordered from her for graduation parties, wedding showers, birthday parties etc. and she never disappoints! The cake in the photo above was baked for my nephew's birthday (he turns 3 today) and it was a big hit.

Also, I'm always looking for new blogs and people to follow, so if you know of anything you think I would like, leave a comment and let me know. I always love hearing from you guys :) Happy Monday!

Wind Down

Sometimes when I've had a long day, even if I know that I'm exhausted it can still be really difficult for me to actually stop and just call it a day. I've always been like this and a lot of the time it's not even that I'm still working on anything. I'll just be there in bed going through my phone, playing on the IPad or just channel surfing. Well, I've come to the realization that it's just a lot healthier to actually throw in the towel when my body is telling me to. One thing that really helps with this is evening tea.

I went on a bit of a tea haul this afternoon and picked up a few of my favorite ones. In case you couldn't tell, I really really love vanilla. When it comes to scents, teas or anything ... vanilla can just do no wrong in my eyes. I picked up a sleepytime vanilla tea and it was so delicious with just a little bit of milk. It really is just the perfect way to wind down after a long day of studying. Of course, a gorgeous sunset doesn't hurt either. Now, if you'll excuse me ... it's time for me to call it a night.

Horsey Bedroom Decor

I've been wanting to get a painting for my apartment for a while now. To be honest though, I just haven't had the time. It's actually really hard for me to do anything that involves having to leave Malibu and I couldn't think of anywhere in Malibu to get an affordable painting. Anyways, yesterday I was in Thousand Oaks and came across this pretty painting of a horse. It just so happened that it kind of went with the color scheme in my apartment as well. Most importantly though, it was really affordable. There was an empty space right above my bed where I've been dying to hang something. This fit perfectly I thought. I am so happy to have found this little gem. Other than that, I haven't been up to much. Just studying and trying to keep up with my readings. I'm also heading out to lunch with some girls from school in a little bit. Hope everyone's weekend is going well :)

What a Week !

So last week was an absolute nightmare for me. We had our first memo assignment for our writing class (mind you, there are only two memos written this semester) and I was making pretty good progress. I'd actually finished my first draft early and was on my way to starting my notes and readings for Civ Pro the next day. Well, long story short, my computer crashed! Like completely crashed, dead FOREVER. Nothing was backed up and literally all my notes so far were on it. Law school moves pretty quickly so I actually had 90+ pages of notes from classes and readings that were just gone. Not to mention my memo that I needed for the next day. So I was in panic mode. It was absolutely brutal trying to remember and write out my memo with no notes and research. Then to make matters worse, the morning I go to class with no computer, I get called on. So I had nothing to go off of because literally I had just lost everything. It was awful ... then my car started acting up. Because of course, while I'm in the middle of an academic breakdown, that is the perfect time for car trouble. Anyways, long story short ... I called my mommy and daddy with all the dramatics and hysterics that my life had to offer at that point ... and they got me another car and a MacBook. Thank God for my parents. I don't know what I would do without them. Other than that, things here have been alright. The workload is definitely picking up. So note to students everywhere ... don't be dumb like me. BACK UP your computer. Save yourself the very unnecessary stress.

Post Work Week Wisdom

"Law school doesn't stop because of life and life doesn't stop because of law school"

I know that it's still only the third week, but this is just one of the great quotes I've heard at my school so far and it really helps to put things into perspective. One of the things I love most about the faculty here, is that they make it a point to remind you to enjoy your life and to remember what's really important. One of our professors just plainly told us that there are two things that you shouldn't let law school interfere with: your relationship with family and friends + your faith. Those are the things that helped bring you to this point in your life in the first place and to abandon them now, you would be doing yourself a great disservice.

This week we had 'Beach Day' at my school. When all the classes wrapped around noon on Friday, I went out with my 3L mentor for lunch and then headed to Zuma for a nice relaxing day with all the other law students. It's important to let your mind take a break every once in a while. This advice doesn't only apply to law schools. There are going to be so many situations that we might go through that require a lot of sacrifice and effort (rightfully so) .... this isn't a bad thing. We need to learn to sacrifice and we need to learn that sometimes it's okay to work too hard ... but we can't forget about the things that really matter. I consider my education to be a valuable investment, but it isn't my only priority. So, my priorities are going to have to somehow coexist.

Regardless of what you're working towards, never allow it to consume you.

Life Lately

School is starting to pick up and get a little more difficult and time consuming. I knew this was coming though, so it's nothing out of the blue. I've also been meeting a lot of really fun and entertaining people. I'm just trying to keep a good balance of not being completely consumed by studies, but DEFINITELY not slacking off as well. I've been doing pretty good with my readings lately, mostly because I've had no internet at my house, no cell reception and no television ... so when I'm home, I pretty much have nothing to do but read and then stare at a wall .... and then sleep. Thankfully though, AT&T has been working on fixing my reception and I bought a television that arrived today. My internet should also finally be installed today. I will no longer be living like a prisoner in Malibu.

As for the photos
1. Found a really great pizza spot in Point Dume. I went there and randomly ran into a girl that's also in my section so we ended up having lunch there.
2. Kaplan sent me this package to basically congratulate me on getting into law school. I studied with them for the LSAT so I thought this was really cool of them. You all know I love my Starbucks, so the gift card and coffee tumbler were my favorite part. In addition to this, they also sent  me a bag, some mints and I received another text book from them that is basically supposed to help guide me along my 1L year and hopefully make it easier.
3. These guys are my new best friends. Not really though, I don't love them ... but I probably spend the most time with my books. This is what my life now consists of.

Hope everyone is having a nice first few days/weeks back at school or what not.

Malibu Cafe

The other day after classes wrapped, we went out to celebrate a new friend's birthday at the Malibu Cafe. It is honestly in the most gorgeous remote location. We arrived fairly early (around 5ish) and had dinner and drinks. It was a really great way to just wind down after a long day of classes and get to know each other better. We exchanged legal jokes, which basically served as confirmation that three years of law school will turn us into the most lame individuals. It's already started, but I had a lot of fun. As the sun began to set, they turned on all the lanterns and pretty lights in the lawn area. By the time we left, it was completely dark out and I just loved how everything looked. It's a little far out for me to go there all the time (I live on the other side of Malibu) but it's definitely worth the trip, every once in a while.
