When I'm not working, I like to spend a good portion of my time reading. Recently I finished reading Belle by Paula Byrne. I was aware of the movie when it came out, however I always like to read a book before watching the movie. I must say, I'm definitely glad that I read this! I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I gather, this book is not that much like the movie. From the previews, it seemed that the movie was focusing on Belle's love story and her struggles in England. Seeing as not that much information was really available about her love life, it really seems as though they took a lot of artistic liberties with the movie; not that it's a bad thing.
This book was definitely a more historical account on what occurred during the slave abolitionist movement in England. It was so informative and I honestly learned so much about all the different players in the movement. Although there was a lot of information about Belle's great uncle, the Lord Chief Justice, there wasn't as much information available about Belle herself. Most of the story surrounding Belle was written by making deductions, based off of everything else that we know was happening around her. I'm normally not into historical accounts or stories, but this one really drew me in and it was honestly such an amazing book. Even though I don't think the movie will be as fact based, I still really look forward to seeing it.
Let me know if you've seen the movie or read this book and what your thoughts were. I would seriously love to hear.
