Life Lately

Since I finished my internship at the District Attorney's office, I've been somewhat enjoying my last few days of summer.  I say "somewhat" because I really only had a week off and I spent it mentoring the incoming first year law students during their orientation.  Although it was quite a trek, driving back and forth between LA and Malibu, I really like my mentees!  They were so fun and enjoyable to be around, so they definitely made the trips worth it.  I'm excited to get to know them better as the school year goes on.

Also, it might sound crazy but I'm actually excited for law school to start again tomorrow.  I feel more sure of myself than I did going into my first year.  I know what it takes to do well, so I'm excited to have an even better year academically than last.  I'm taking three required classes this semester: Corporations, Evidence, and Criminal Procedure, so it should be challenging.  In addition to that, I'm taking two elective classes and I'm also on a journal this year.

They say:
1L they scare you to death
2L they work you to death
3L they bore you to death

... So I guess I will see how true the phrase is (of course I'll keep you posted).

P.S.  I also tried Cookie Butter from Trader Joe's for the first time.  Soooooo sooooo delicious!

Work It Wednesday: Legal Interview Edition

Jacket: The Limited, Top: Forever 21, Skirt: Forever 21, Bag: Zara, Shoes: Zara, Watch: Michael Kors

As you know, it's OCI season for law schools right now.  This means back-to-back interviews and a whole lot of ... corporate apparel.  To be honest, I used to hate suits and the idea of wearing suits.  Whenever I would wear one, it just didn't feel right because I never felt like myself.  It was strange at first, but now I feel so so comfortable!  I definitely feel a lot more official in a suit and it always helps when all of your peers are rocking it as well.

One thing that I did struggle with early on was finding nice and affordable pieces that I could wear to interviews and networking events.  I ended up splurging on a nice pant suit from The Limited.  I still feel that blazers/jackets should be a bit of a splurge, but I've noticed that with bottoms, it's often okay to go a cheaper route.  I just try to find pieces that compliment my nicer tops and I definitely try to keep the two shades as similar as possible.

Coffee Walks

What I enjoy most after my longest days, is strolling around the neighborhood and sipping on some iced coffee.  I don't know why, but it just has this way of relaxing me when nothing else can.  Today was definitely one of those days where an iced coffee session was absolutely necessary.  I just returned home from the three biggest law firm interviews that I've ever had ... let's just say, they were intense!  I could not wait to get home, change out of my suit, and into my chucks!  I have no idea how the interviews went (I'm the worst at gauging these things) so I'm just hoping for the best.  Please cross your fingers for me that I get a call back.  I also have a couple of other firm interviews lined up next week, but these are the ones that I was really hoping to land.

Although interviewing was draining, I had the opportunity to meet students from different schools in the area as well and really get to know a few of them.  It's so refreshing to meet people who are on the same path as you and who understand your struggles and your triumphs.  I met one girl from USC who was really sweet and I actually wish that we had exchanged contact info but of course, I didn't think of that until afterward.  Oh well, at least I have my coffee -- oh and I'm also meeting up with some other law students, who work at the DA's office with me, tonight!  Should be fun!

Hope everyone's weekend is going great.  Let me know what you've been up to.

Nicest Thing

Just because I haven't done a music post in a while.  I forgot how much I loved this song ...

Great Resource For Women In Law

As with any other career path, building a network and creating meaningful relationships can have an incredible impact on your legal career.  If you are like me and did not grow up with any lawyers or judges in the family (or as close family friends) then beginning to form these relationships can be very difficult.  One thing that I've been trying to do more of lately is attend networking events held by different firms and organizations.  I've also found that there are so many websites/blogs/twitters dedicated to helping law students like myself navigate this crazy legal community.  This site, Ms. JD, is specifically tailored to women in law.  It provides a lot of insight and touches on many concerns that women in the legal field experience on a daily basis.  There are tips for interviewing, creating a resume, and even getting into law school in the first place.  What I love about this site is that it's also extremely interactive.  It's very quick and easy to create a login and join the Ms. JD blogging community as well.  It even allows you to link your personal profile to your LinkedIn profile (which is another important internet tool for all young lawyers-in-the-making).  Below, I've included some of my favorite links from Ms.JD.  Please feel free to share any other great sites for law students and young professionals!
